The Many Uses of Diamond Grinding Wheels

Diamond grinding wheels have many classifications. Their shape, bond, grit size, and concentrations determine their classifications. The application of these different types of grinding wheels are for different abrasive and grinding machining operations. So, the usage of diamond grinding wheels are for grinding machines. If you are doing grinding or machining processes, it is important to use the proper grinding wheel.

There are many applications today that use the diamond grinding wheels. They can be found in many different types which include resin, metal, vitrified, and electro-plated. Resin wheels are the most used among these types of grinding wheels. Resin wheels are used in many tool room and production applications. There are more specific applications for the metal and vitrified types of wheels and they are newer bond types. They are more expensive since these are rare. But these types of wheels are usually custom made to order items. You find electro-plated wheels in cut-off wheels and they are used in low demanding abrasive grinding. If you are doing plastic, then the electro-plated wheel is used.

Since each of these wheels are used of specific applications, it is important to know these types of grinding wheel and their applications. If you don’t use the proper type of grinding wheels, then your grinding operations will not be effective. it is very necessary, before you begin your grinding operations, to take not of the kind of materials you are grinding, and the appropriate grinding wheel to use for that material.

Many types of materials and processes require a diamond grinding wheel. When grinding carbides only a diamond wheel can be used and a CBD grinding wheel is used on steel.

Other classifications of diamond grinding wheels include the synthetic diamond, the cubic boron nitride (CBN) and the alumina-zirconia. The synthetic diamond is the hardest of the three and the softest is the alumina-zirconia. The factors given below should be considered when selecting the type of wheel to use.

The hardness of the item that you will grind should first be determined. If you are going to grind iron or steel, then the ideal wheel is a CBN wheel. For non-ferrous metal where you need to remove a large amount of metal, the synthetic diamond blade should be used. If you are grinding soft metals, then the wheel to use is the alumina-zirconia.

You should next look at the nomenclature plate on the grinding machine. You need to check if the speed of the grinding machine will not let the wheel disintegrate or separate during operation and this can be determined by the speed rating in meters per second.

You also need to determine if you are doing wet or dry grinding and then select the coarseness of the wheel. To get the best results, you need to determine the right grinding wheels for these conditions.
